Getting ready to close up the box and I thought I should now reinforce the area where I will be putting a sound port before I do .
I am assuming I could use spruce or hardwood , depending upon if I want the inner edge to look light or dark.with the grain running perpendicular or at least diagonal to the rim grain.
I am thinking many (or some ) smaller holes in a pattern rather than one larger opening since this is my first solo box and I dont want to reveal all of my "secrets" if you know what I mean ?.
any advice ,thoughts, notions,suggestions, inclinations,ideas, or even horror stories would be appreciated . oh this is a mahogany box .. thanks Jody

Some like to laminate wood patches, but I like to use fiberglass set in epoxy. No fitting or clamping involved and equally strong in every direction.

I just did my first & I backed the side with .080 maple, cross grain to the side.
The port area is nice & rigid, despite the fact that it has some fairly narrow areas between the cutouts.
I like the epoxy glass idea... Hey Douglas... Do you thicken your epoxy with a filler to stop it from flowing?

Try deleting all your cookies and Internet files. I need to do that from time to time and it lets me back in.

I like to use a thin piece of spruce with the grain running 90 perpendicular to the grain of the side. Seems to work well. I think almost anything will work assuming you give it some thought.
