Shellac is a little hard to find around these parts. Just curious to know if the shellac stage of finishing can be skipped and proceed directly to nitro.

Rob buddy you are good-to-go.

Nitro sticks fine directly to epoxy finishing resins/pore fillers. A very light scuff sanding with no finer then 220/240 is helpful.

The thing to remember is that shellac will stick fine to epoxy but epoxy does not stick well to shellac. I have sprayed nitro directly over epoxy and not used any shellac and it works fine.

BTW during my read of what I just posted to make sure that I spelled things correctly...... I noticed that you are new!

I have heard of some going with nitro straight over epoxy but personally if unable to find 100% wax free shellac then I would use a vinyl or rosewood sealer.

Where are you that Shellac is hard to find? There is always online. Personally shellac is one thing I would never be without in a woodworking shop. To many things to seal the end grain on not have some around.

Kelly Moore paint stores carry Zinsser’s Bulls-Eye “Seal Coat” it is 100% wax free shellac.

Heck, around here, you can get Seal Coat in both spray cans and in quarts at the BORG.

Thank you for the quick replies! I could not find the Zinsser, any other brand that says
100 % wax free shellac. We do have the usual Lowes, Home Depot, Etc. here in SW Missiouri. Even a Grizzily Industrial! Oops, I hope I did not offend anyone

Anyhow, I will simply order some and meanwhile I can at least finish my sound box.

Our local HD & Lowes does carry it from time to time but it is spotty. Kelly Moore is a major distributor for it and always carries it but they cator to contractors and don't always carry it in quarts but mostly in gallons

I'm sure others can provide additional sources.

All you need is a scale, a jar, and some denatured alcohol. The Millburn french polish tutorial (linked in the OLF tutorial page) describes the various ratios needed for different cuts.
