Hi, My names sebastian and im really intrested in becoming a luthier. Hope fully I can eventually contribute to this forum as a memeber.

I was just wondering about woods for guitars, Electric & Acoustic.
I live in Ireland so I'll be using woods I can get here, exception being rosewood.
I can get Oak, Ash, Beech, Birch, Cherry, Elm, Sycamore (european maple as far as i know), Chestnut, Lime, Alder.
All air or kiln dried.

Any of these suitable ?

Here are a few more woods i could get.

Yew, Acacia, Laburnum, Eucalyptus, Hawthorn, Walnut, Lilac, Crab Apple, Plane, Maple, Pine, Larch, Fir.

Plenty of guitars been built with some of those woods ...

Fender strats and teles are almost all ash or alder - all the old ones for sure.

Acoustics .. eucalyptus, sycamore, walnut, maple ... all have been used plenty.

Beech,Cherry,Birch & Sycamore are good for acoustics & electrics!
The others are good for mostly electrics!!!!!
I've used Oak and there is NO reason not to-but make sure it's cut on the quarter!!

The cherry you can get in your part of the world makes a great looking neck. From what I've read here, it's very stable.

its not to be a detective, but may I ask why you ONLY want to use wood from Ireland ????
Other countries has incredible beautiful an wonderful sounding wood to offer to.
a suggestion ! Check out rctonewoods or some of the OLF:S other great vendors for some great examples of woods.

I would rather use the woods we have in Ireland for now because I am starting off and I dont want to buy-in expensive woods from abroad.

The cheaper i can build a guitar at the moment with quality products that work the better.

Ok. Totally understand, Well a suggestion though. I am not sure what the prises for wood is over there ! I live in Sweden, and Buying from a around here is more expensive then getting wood from the USA. the Dollar is really low right now, so I bet you will make money getting it from the USA. Maple in europe as an example, is priced in Euro and if I buy a maple B/S from europe, it would cost me about 180 euro or so, that converted to dollar would be "from our currency" 108 dollar since of the low Dollar. so 108 + tax "25%" = 135 USD. So getting maple from the USA "I would" make about 45 USD. I would bet its about the same for you ??
