Anyone have any tips for dealing with calcium deposits in dark woods like EIR? I just surfaced two sets of EIR and one has a fair amount of tiny white streaks.

Thanks,

Bob

Bob buddy I had the same problem with some EIRW and quickly learned that the deposits will not sand out.

So.... what worked for me was to use a felt tipped "Flair" pen in a brown shade and color the deposits prior to finishing. That did the trick and I was unable to find where they were when the guitar was finished.

Some people wash with muriatic acid, but I am reluctant to work with it. Sometimes you can just flick them out of the pores with a straight pin or the point on a knife. Sometimes white pockets are not calcium, but sap, in which case water and a rag may remove it.

If it's a oily set-wipe with acetone -it will pull color onto the deposits!
Try it now but definately do it before you apply the first of finish!!

Wish I had read this post about a week ago.... I've got the same problem too. Luckily it is a small area and I covered it up best I could and let the rest go.
