Hey all, just picked this jointer up off of craigslist... $375, used maybe 3-4 times. Its still got packing labels on it. Came with the wheeled base and extra set of blades too. "Leather has hardly been broke" (my father-in-law likes to say that about clean used cars ) Very pleased. Whadya think?

You will use that thing soooooo much. Especially on squaring up necks and such. The only other tool in my shop that I use more is my Bandsaw.

I joint billets before resawing.

This will work well with that Bandsaw you're eyeing.

I joint all tops, backs, sides, neck billets with mine.

You will too. Mine is an Atlas made in KalamazooUSA....

This is likely made in Taiwan, the other Kalamazoo.

My PowerMatic Saw was likely made in the same factory...

Oh and my General International Drum Sander, Taiwan the other Canada too.

Well, until my shipper decided to more than double the shipping cost, I was ready to buy that saw. Turns out that without a "loading dock" all bets are off. Whaa.

Make sure you set it up right. A precision Straight Edge is a must and I don't mean a cheap aluminum yard stick. Veritas makes both aluminum and steel straight edges. I always prefer the steel as it's just that much harder and take a little abuse, although I treat my precision instruments with care.

If you're not using one of those fancy magnetic blade setting jigs or if you need to reset the blades as they were here is a good tip. When setting up the outfeed table to be perfectly in line with the tops of the blades, once it's coplanar with the infeed of course, make sure you lay the straight edge across both tables, inplug the jointer, rotate the blades by hand and lower or raise the outfeed table until you can hear them hittting the straight edge but not moving it. I used set them up by laying the straight edge across and using my eyes and a flashlight to make sure there is no gap and that always led to a micorscopic amount of space between the blade and the straight edge which in turn led to wedge cuts. So now I listen and feel, works much better.

Make sure you unplug it. My cousin(more like an uncle), was working on the blades of a jointer, and someone hit the switch. Lost all the fingers on his right hand, except the thumb, right at the last knuckle. Lived a long time with a rubber hand. Best pool shooter I ever saw. He'd just rock that stick between his thumb and the rubber hand. Perfect control.

I have George's old Atlas Kalamazoo.

It ate his right center finger down to the knuckle joint one day.

Doctor said, Hey George, the flap of skin the blades left are a perfect skin graft cover, so he sewed it up.

Only thing more dangerous that I know of, is a spindle shaper.

But you will love having a jointer.

I'd be out trying to buy another if mine disappeared.

My junior high school shop teacher lost his index and middle fingers to the second knuckle on a jointer. Get some good push pads and push sticks and keep your hands from getting over those blades. Always think that board could kick out. There aint no sewing the finger back with the jointer.

Thanks all for scaring me. But I do take it to heart.

Now, I NEED a band saw. I'm down here in Florida for vaca. Scheming about how I could get over to New Smyrna to take advantage of Simon's saw. But, its 800 miles round trip. Whaa.
