Would this happen with thin quarter sawn wood or thicker test samples? As you know, quarter sawn shrinks more evenly so there is less likelihood of splitting. I don’t know what this process does in terms of putting stresses into the wood. I could see moisture escaping from the ends faster than the middle being a problem, on the other hand, the wood on a guitar back is quite thin so it might not be such an issue. Maybe it depends on the species. Were they having warping problems too? I’m going to be doing some larger tests in the next few weeks in my bigger kiln.
