On this old Martin restoration I pulled out 4 frets and I need to measure them for thickness to replace them. They all measure the same randomly in different placed to .048 then on the same fret in a different location .050, .052 and so on.

Measuring the slots with feller gauges is a lesson in humility. I just can't do it.

So should I just take like 3 frets, measure them in 3 places and take the average?

How do you measure these darned things?

the old bar frets were "Chased" or in plain words hammered on so there will be some discrepancies I measure the thickest point
it is easier to make thinner than to make thicker. I have to over a 100 bar fret jobs , it isn't rocket science just physics
