It seems that legendary classical guitar maker José Romanillos has passed away at the age of 89. We don’t talk much about classical guitars here but it’s fair to say he had an extraordinary influence on the modern understanding of the classical guitar. If you haven’t read his book on Spanish guitar making it’s compelling material. His research and writing on Antonio Torres was extensive. A pivotal figure in modern luthiery.

While he will be most often be remembered for his guitars, having taken his 1 month class in Spain in 2007, and returned again later to visit, I will remember him most for being an amazing human being. I think he would be considered a special person, never to be forgotten, by anyone who had the chance to meet and talk with him. I will also always remember him as a soft spoken visionary.-Bob

Probably like most I never met Mr. Romanillos nor have I ever held one of his instruments but from what I have seen and read he was an amazing person and legendary craftsman. RIP Mr. Romanillos you are more than a luthier your are a master of the art.

IIRC correctly Max B an OLFer took his course too. RIP

89 is pretty good run too. RIP Maestro.

10 years ago I was in Spain and had the privilege of spending an evening with José Romanillos and his wife Marian at their house. I had my video camera and recorded several videos of our conversation. I am posting them here In homage to Maestro José Romanillos and his life's work. It is clear to see his passion for the guitar. Enjoy!

I met him, quite by accident, in1974 (I think). We were on holiday in Wiltshire (UK) and came across a village craft fair which must have been in Semley and José had a stall there with a half-made guitar and a finished one. He was very kind and chatted to me for quite a long time about guitar making. At the time his workshop was just up the road in the grounds of Julian Bream's house. He said it was a pity we weren't there the day before as the craft fair was opened by Julian Bream who gave a short recital on one of his guitars.
