Sunburst test #3 - Jeff refers to this recipe as a traditional burst used by Gibson. This one uses pigment instead of stain for the dark color. This results in a more opaque border. I didn’t like it at first but after adding the 3rd coat with the reddish color I really started to like it. One more test recipe tomorrow, my own recipe, and then on to putting it on an instrument.

I would topcoat at least one of the test tops to see how it looks with the dye and shellac. Probably not necessary, but I would do it anyway.

Thanks again for suggesting this, Clay. I did take two all the way to the buffer today. It uncovered some things that I might not have thought about.

- I have to make sure the lock in coats are good quality, wet coats. I was a little nervous about putting the topcoats down and so was spraying very (a little too) light and dry. When I went to scuff the “iced tea” burst in order to spray topcoats I had some scratches go past the dark edge and exposed the lighter color. I’ll need to keep this in mind on a real instrument.

- Buffing just a top plate is an adventure. :D

All in all I’m pretty happy with all the tests and I’m pretty confident that I can do a sunburst on an instrument.
