Anyone have a lead on who bought the Waldron stock? I’m in need of one of their OM templates. Have tried those from other sources but Waldrons is what I need. Anyone have one to sell/trade/ give away?

OK, I know you said you have tried others, and this is the one that you want. However, just lately there seems to have been an explosion of new sources on the market, and if you can’t get your favorite there are lots of other options for sourcing templates in Perspex, wood or MDF. If you search “acoustic guitar template” in Amazon or AliExpress you will find quite a few options. Luthiery tools are very cheap from Chinese makers on AliExpress, and some of it is even good quality!

John Hall,
I looked at your halo video on YouTube yesterday. I have also read comments that you have made about some suppliers of plans and templates being (very) inaccurate but that Waldrons are accurate. Are your patterns and Waldrons exact matches but different only in technique and material? Lastly, is your OM template for a 14 fret? I have seen some OM that call for a 12 fret neck but it’s my understanding that a 000 and an OM differ only in the forward shift of the sound-hole and x- brace.

Waldron used tracings that I had provided. To prove a point ,
if you got information that an OM was a 12 fret that is totally incorrect. The OM was NEVER a 12 fret. You also have more misinformation
the 000 can be both 12 or 14 fret per martin spec and was also both scale lengths so what makes them different

it is the bracing. while OM ( 1/4 scalloped long scale) and 000 use 5/16 braces and can be scalloped or non scalloped, 14 frets are the same body shape the bracing is what is different. The 000 and OM were not forward shifted that was the Dred and that happened in 1939. Though for marketing I think they may offer that in custom. The sound hole will obviously move as it is scale length oriented.

Also some plan and print makers may have used Martin nomenclature but there were in name only . The shapes and bracing were often way off more for legal issues so as not to get sued by Martin I assume.

I have been doing this for 25 years have been a Martin repair center for 15 or more. I have been trained in martin repair techniques and was able to get tracings off martin templates. If you get the martin history that was updated by Dick boak a few years ago that will get you more of the history of Martin.

another note is the body changes through the years the OM changed from the original shape later in the 30;s the original OM was a bit smaller

Thanks John for you detailed response. I make 000-12s and 00-12s almost exclusively and wanted to experiment with an OM but after going down the AGF rabbit hole about the subject I think I’ll stick to what I (somewhat) know. Now to go really deep into the rabbit hole there is the Martin Norman Blake OM-12 model.

The Norm Blake was started by doing a conversion on a 00 for Norm. then it snow balled.

Norman had a 00-28G which is a gut stringed Martin with a 000 body and a 12-fret neck. It had beautiful Brazilian as they all did because the smaller guitars had the best looking wood because of markout latitude on D-size sets. He had the guitar converted to steel strings, new neck, new bridge. In fact that has been done to many dozens of the 00-28G guitars. It’s a thing! Makes a great guitar.
after that they did this to a 14 fret but made it 12
