And why do you who use tape use tape? Is that so you can mark with a pencil first?

Yes and I started doing that drilling tuner holes it helps prevent any tearout of the edges of the hole if the tape is fully down on the wood. It does make marking easier and more obvious too.

It's not necessary just an old habit that works for me.

I have just remembered that Stew Mac has quite a good discussion on this subject.

The hardware thing is quite an issue for me as I use the Gore/Gilet join which leaves a big brass bar up the heel.
