I saw a small vise in the Woodcraft sale paper, but I couldn't find it on line; not on Woodcraft, or Wood River. I went the other direction to Rockler, another nice store, and they didn't have any small vises. Then I went to the Woodcraft store and they had it. It seems pretty nice for the price, $49.

I bought four 1" carriage bolts, and made a base to put them in, then screwed the base to the bench with wood screws. It seems pretty solid. It was an easy way to mount it. It will rotate like the old one; but why?

I have a large old bench top model that my father-in-law had on his bench. I have the bench too; but I have a piece of glass on it, for varnishing, assembling, and glueing. One day that is all I will do there! My wife said, don't get rid of that old vise. Then she was happy that it looked like a nice little vise, and had the "little rod that goes back and forth," that she used to play with on her dad's workbench. She can do that anytime she wants.

It worked great for holding peg blanks, to file fit them to the fixture that holds the bridge blank. Nuts can go on there too; and you don't have to worry about scarfing up your headstock. Not that anyone has ever done that. The classical bridge was the thing that made me want the little vise in the first place.

The old vise would never work for that. It was meant to hold parts of cars, and pipes that need fittings broken loose; that sort of thing. The copper sleeves that go over the top, with long tabs to sort of hold them in place don't help.

There are still a few things to finish up before the parts are done for the little guitar, and viola. I had a small scrap of ebony that was tapered, and the slot was tapered. I was EASY to fit it with the taper. Tap it in, scrape the high spots, repeat. Besides that it is SNUG.

The viola need the pegs, tail button, fingerboard, and saddle.

But did you resist? I was painting a picture of innocence. The unconditional love of a father and child, and husband and wife.
