Anyone know what the diameter is/was, or what have you used for this?

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I have built L-00, L2 & Nick Lucas, and used 4" for all.

Which body? The late ones with the 14 3/4" lower bout are all 4".
The earlier ones (round bottom, 13 1/2" lower bout) are smaller. The one I measured was 3 7/16".

It's the smaller one with the round bottom.
Thanks for that. Just checking, I used 90 mm before (3.543) and was happy the way it turned out.
I'm using the Kenneth Michael Guitars templates (I bought a dozen mixed Martin/Gibson/Lowden) and he just seems to use 4" for most of them.
Thanks to all who replied.

1926 NLS is 3-1/2”

Side depth is varied 4-3/4” to a full 5” with 1/4” - 3/8” taper to the neck.
