I have one of these and love it. 36" straight edge with graduations to 1/64". Just noticed they're on clearance for a mere $40, so go get 'em!

Good timing. Thanks. My 24" one is not quite long enough to tell me just how warped up my new jointer tables are. Arghh.

Speaking of which, I should write a review of that jointer/planer.....

I bought the 36 incher and another $50 worth of stuff from the sale list. I don't know how I got through this much of my life without that stuff. My life is complete now.........or at least until the next sale.

Crowns chisels are good tools. The butt chisels (if I'm remembering right) are about 6" overall length so they are short, but useful.

Got my stuff in yesterday. The straight edge is nice but unfortunately it was dropped probably by UPS right on the corner of the measuring edge [headinwall]

The edge is dented in to the 5/64th mark :(

I'd never use this tool to measure in on something to even 6 inches probably but darn if that knife edge point that starts the measurement would be useful. I guess I'll send it back I hope they have more because it really is a nice straight edge.

What would a luthier use a 36" straightedge for?

I suppose you could sharpen it, put a handle on it, and use it for a sword! :D

Setting neck angle and bridge position.

Also to mark fret slot positions, and check flatness of fingerboard and neck surfaces. But 24" would be plenty for those things, and less cumbersome. Maybe I should go place an order myself...

Anyway, glad everyone is enjoying the party :)
Except for jfmckenna. Stupid UPS pfft Hope you get it worked out.

Yeah you can run it from the nut all the way to the bridge, can't do that with my 24. Necessary? Of course not. Useful? Yes. Especially if you make electric bass's like I do from time to time.

It helps with seeing the level of sides that can run 30" or so too. If you want a cheap 4 footer, buy a drywall T square, and grind the rivets out, or cut it, and you got a straight aluminum 48" bar for around 20 bucks.

Great to help set up a buzzer properly and eliminate snipe. Also helpful for checking stock to see what you are working with and making the edge of a board for heavy stock removal prior to squaring to ensuring only a bare minimum of material is lost over the process. Also handy for indicating the rip line when your looking for the best way to avoid incursions or excessive short grain in a board. The weight also helps in positioning to a cut line when using the tool as a fence for a utility knife when converting thin sheet stock etc, and the length gives you somewhere to clamp if required for incremental long cuts such as when cutting your own thickness sander belts from a wider roll.....and if Dath Vader ever found his way into your shop, well you wouldn't stand a fighting chance without one.

Cheers

Kim
