Just curious....is there some benefit to doing the purfling step last??
(I've only ever done it as the first step - after flush trimming - & have had no issues)

Maybe but I don't know for sure. But it seems to me that any time you have an opportunity to remove less wood in a single pass the risk would be lower - all other things the same of course such as climb cuts, sharp bit, etc.

I did the group buy purchase about 4 years ago on the Luthier Forum (Mario's place) for the bit set. I don't recall who did it, though.

For my binding jig, I've gone with the Dewalt laminate trimmer with independent bearing guide. No fuss on bearing falling off, burning up, et cetera. Downside is that you have to set up each time. On the other hand, you're free to buy top quality spiral bits (e.g. CMT) which serve the purpose well.

Ok, Iget the lazy suzan part, but where do you get that bearing fixture? Are there drawings and specifications for that base?

Filippo,

Yes, I finally figured that out. I am ordering the one for the Bosch. My only question now is regarding the proper bit (spiral down??) size and all of that.

Mike, I've got the Bosch & guide you linked from Amazon. Works pretty well for me. I've had to buy a couple of different sized bits for routing different depths because the guide only adjusts so much. The upside is that you can make really fine adjustments to the edge guide. I think it's a different method than what's typically done, but I don't see why it can't work.

I can vouch for the StewMac bit/bearing set with the bushing to offset the bearing. I did the binding/purfling on my first guitar just recently using their set (on my Williams-derivative jig). You cut the binding channel first, then put the little bushing on before the bearing and then cut the purfling channel - it works great! 8-)

Cheers,
Dave F.
