I've never tap toned a redhead or a blonde, but I'm curious which one pings and shimmers?

I’m curious to hear news of results from those that purchased and have used the paired sets of roasted/non-roasted sitka sets that we offered a while back with this posting. Does anyone have anything to share? Or was there a posting and thread about this that I missed?

I have not had time to use these sets yet. Probably won't for another year too as somehow I have actually managed to have a waiting list on building now. So for now I will just let them age like a fine wine.

As for torrifaction in general though, the last two I built, an OM and a parlor guitar, with torrified red spruce came out well. The OM was for a guy who collects vintage guitars and when he picked it up and played it he said, "it sounds just like a 1930's Martin." So I took that as a compliment. As far as I could tell it definitely made a nice sounding guitar but I would not know enough to claim that it sounded like it was aged.

I, also, have not used them yet. I am really excited to build with them though!

I will be sure to contact you, Brent, when I finish it.

This afternoonI am getting right on thicknessing and trimming these 16 sets of cooked/un-cooked sets to all the same dimensions, and record the weights. The post these sets in our online store as 2 set- sets. The uncooked and cooked sequentially cut sets. Each priced per 2 set lot by grade and sort. They will be offered first come first serve basis when posted. I will let you guys know right when they are listed, as well as ANZLF and followers of ASW on Facebook.

Ahhhhh!!!!!
I’m glad I ran across this. I was confused on the webpage. I thought that only half the set wAs cooked. I was wondering if people make a top out of half cooked and half non cooked ( I was thinking ...”well I guess it could yield an interesting tonal palate...) ha
Face to palm... duh ...
Thanks for clearing this up

Sound is subjective.

One change to the wood that takes place during the torrefication process also occurs when wood ages. As it ages, the wood gets more opaque.

To date, torrefication is the only process that makes wood more opaque. The longer wood is 'aged' through torrefication, the more opaque it gets.

The first guitar I re-topped with torrefied spruce was a 1967 Ovation. This gave me an opportunity to directly compare a 50-year-old top with a brand-new one and with a torrefied top. All three of the tops below are the same thickness.

Shining a bright light behind a new top.

Shining a bright light behind the 50-year-old top. I conversed with a guy on another forum. He took the Martin factory tour and they showed this same test on their VTS tops. He said that those tops had the same translucency as this top.

Shining a bright light behind the torrefied top. Completely opaque.

Yeah Dan I noticed that same observation when I built my first torrified top and I stuck a light in the sound hole to look inside. The top was completely dark. Interesting for sure. I've got a guitar in for restoration now that was built circa 1840 and you can still see through the top.
