Just an update, for those who are interested:

I’ve been using my spray booth a lot here lately, and it has turned out to be a great design. The only modifications I have made to what is shown above are better lights (LED grow lights all around the opening) and moving all electric switches and connections to several feet outside of the booth.

Anyway, my point is that my research and calculations really paid off. This design works great. Feel free to borrow any features, but really, the thing that makes this (or any spray booth) work well is having a powerful enough fan.

The Led lighting is a really good idea!
I use an open 2x2 frame outside and struggle to orient the workpiece for visibility.
My spraying sessions are dependent on the weather.

Have you considered a 3 phase motor and a VFD? Might be a bit pricey but would work very well.

I’m really happy with my air speed, so there’s no need. I have friends that can set me up with the VFD, but it wouldn’t be worth the trouble. Good thought, though.

Here is a photo of the new lights in my spray booth, with a neck on the rotating fixture inside the booth:



I built a wooden frame that fits snugly, but not over-tight, inside the front opening of the booth. I attached some 45 degree wooden mounting blocks as places to screw the mounting brackets for the new lights. This points the light toward the center of the booth, where the bodies and necks will normally be. There are four lights (to quote Jean-Luc Picard), and each has a plug on one end and an outlet on the other end, so they can be powered in series (four is below the recommended limit, per the instructions). This gives me one power cord coming out of the lower left corner, where I also run the power cord for the rotisserie. I plug them both into a short extension cord with its own switch, which sits 4 feet outside the booth. The lights are LED grow lights, which have a significant leg up on other fixtures in terms of light output.

Is this explosion proof? Nope. But it is pretty low risk. As I said at the beginning of this thread, my booth does not meet the applicable commercial booth requirements regarding fire prevention and suppression, but it exceeds the requirements regarding ventilation. Having used this design for a while, I feel very safe. Plus, in terms of respiratory safety, I use really good PPE.

The placement and amount of light is very helpful while spraying. I'm quite happy with how this improvement turned out.
