Paul that is a very tasteful work on the maple leaves. Can you share with us a little more detail as to the type of shell used?

Hi Anthony,

Sorry, forgot the particulars, since I haven't posted much lately!

From top of board: 5th fret -Mop & Paua
7th fret- Gold Mop
9th fret- Red ab select with Gold mop stem
12fret pair- Gold Mop & Red ab w/gold Mop stem
Water ripples are Paua abalam

All lines are saw cuts- no engraving.
I chose to leave a few leaves free of lines due to grain orientation and color.

Popular thread here... Congrats on the century mark! I'm sure you've learned something from every build and this is a fine looking guitar.

Tech question - Your sound port is sunken in - did you just accomplish this by using a ply laminate (hence the red/orange/red) on the inside and simply sanding a bevel around the port? Did you sand by hand or use something like a racquetball with sandpaper glued to it. Probably something more advanced than either of those but the racquetball (or any size ball) idea just kind of came to mind as a interesting way to ensure a consistent bevel.

Yes on the laminate. also reinforces the side.

Port bevel is done high tech! Files and sandpaper... as was the pyramid bridge. You'd be surprised how few tools and jigs I actually have.

Thanks everyone! Hope that some ideas have come forth from the detail shots. I also hope that we all see that an instrument doesn't have to have wide bindings and big purflings and/or abalone everywhere to look classy. Oftentimes, letting the wood speak, allows it to speak louder.

Do you use polymerized tung oil or just pure tung oil?
