Hey Everyone,

I'd like to introduce myself.  My name is Steve Sollod (pronounced like "solid".  I always thought it would be a good name for a detective. )  I have been in the grips of guitar building for about a year.

I met a cousin of a friend at a Christmas party last year and he had a guitar that he had made.  At the moment that I played it, I was ready to make one.  He showed me around his shop and finally asked "Do you want to make one?)  I said "absolutely!".  He was very generous with his time and sold some of his materials at very reasonable prices.  He had taken Frank Finoccio's class and had made several.  He supervised me very closely and took me through the process.  (I don't know if he would want to mention his name and I don't think he checks out the OLF.) It took about a year, but the first one is finished.  It actually came out quite nice.  It is a deep OM with Ovengkol back & sides, Adorondack spruce top, a Martin cherry neck, ebony end graft and head plate - w/inlay, and black fiber binding.  You guys could see the cosmetic flaws but most folks that see it don't notice (i.e., some roughness in my first rosette, and just okay finish).  ...but it sounds and plays very good.

During the summer I started another one that I'm doing by myself with no help.  Its coming along quite nicely so far.  I have completed the construction and I'm working on finishing with tru-oil.  This one is a standard OM in EIRW w/carpathian top and sycamore binding that I got from John Hall at Blues Creek.

I have been lurking for several months and have learned a lot from you guys!  Sorry for not revealing myself sooner...

Welcome from out of the shadows Steve!

I feel like the doorman or something - I'm home with the flu and hanging out here and greeting all the new posters...Do I get a uniform or something for that?

Oh no, I posted of pic of me up here before...Hesh is probably already working on it...

Steve! Looking forward to seeing some Sollod guitars!

Mitch

Welcome, Steve!  This is the place, but if you've bee lurking, you already know that.  We are at your "beck and call" to answer questions and abuse you with slapstick humor.  Of course, if I answer a question, it would be a form of abuse anyway, cause you are way ahead of me.  You have completed a guitar.  If you have not done so, check out the Archives, and another good place to look is the "Nonresident OLF Tutorial Page", currently residing in OZ until the new software package is installed.  It is loaded with good stuff!  Pictorial heavy tutorials on various ways of getting it done, with lots of discussion and praise.

That's quite alright Steve we have enough exhibitionists around here already

Seriously, if there is such a thing here..... Welcome to the OLF!

I enjoyed reading about how you got into this madness and it sounds like you are well on your way to being hopelessly addicted to guitar building.  Kudos to your friend who helped you out too - this is the spirit that many of us subscribe to and try to replicate when possible.

Great to see you here my friend.

This is to test inserting a picture.  This is a shot of the top braces being carved.  Let's see if it works...  How does it look?

Steve - It looks great, if I might say so myself.  As another newbie who joined this last summer and chompin at the bit to start....You are so far ahead of the curve!

Also, it is great to have another Steve to combat the overabundance of Daves!
