I suspect Martin used German Spruce through its history to a greater or lesser extent. Jimmy Westbrook, author of "The Century That Shaped the Guitar" did dendrochronological (the study of annular tree rings) research on an 1830's Martin and narrowed down the area of Europe in which the Spruce was grown.
Guitars in the early fifties have shown up with what certainly looks like German (European) spruce.
Most notably is the late sixties when some of the high end models were German spruce. This included the early D-12-35, new D-41 model and the reintroduced D-45.
