Just thought I would introduce myself. I've been lurking here and have learned alot. This forum is great.

I've completed 5 guitars: an archtop built in a building class, another archtop using laminated top/back, a steel string from a kit and 2 classicals from scratch.

I've been playing guitar for quite awhile but still feel like a beginner making them.

Hope to participate alot in this forum.

Welcome Sam! you already have more builds under your belt than a lot of guys here, and not nearly as many as some, so you'll fit right in!
Come on out of the shadows and join the obsession!!!!

Welcome to the OLF, Sam. We like pics! Show off your fiddles please. Also, I am interested in knowing what class/teacher you refer to.

The class I took was with Frank Finocchio and Dale Unger. I would highly recommend them to anyone. Super nice guys and really knew what they were doing, plus you keep the guitar in the end. I don't think they teach joint classes anymore but they do teach classes on their own.

I'll try to post some pictures soon.

Pictures of your work are highly recommended. You will then be allowed to participate in the regular abuse of other members here. :D
We are after all, a picture oriented medium. Max size 256K. Now don't forget! Just kidding about the abuse thing.

I too would like to welcome you, Sam! And don't be shy with the pics...the folks here are really nice unless you're trying to get $10k for an instrument or have a Martin  (JK guys)

Hi Sam and a big welcome to you to the OLF!!!!!

When I joined I had completed 5 guitars too so I can relate.

Some things to remember - watch out for Waddy although he is harmless and very friendly he might send you a bottle of Monkey butt powder....... :D

If you ever post a picture of your face Billy T. will Photoshop you into an animal, a women in a bikini, and much worse....... I have been known to engage in such childish behavior too. :o

Over all this is a very fine forum with a superb membership of very knowledgeable and helpful people. And you have joined at a very good time in as much as we just launched new forum software with capabilities second to none.

So welcome my friend and please do not hesitate to jump right in with this very friendly bunch.

Welcome Sam!
Don't believe Hesh, Sam! Your face is safe here, just post a side, front and 3/4 view and see! :D

I personally don't have a problem with 10G's for a guitar! I don't have much respect for a 2G guitar been sold at 10G!

Hi Sam, welcome aboard. I just joined recently myself and I'm loving the fame and fortune that being a member has bought me already!

It seems to me that I've settled in and found myself a job around here - that is, to reply right after Billy T's posts every night..... :D

Remember - NO PICTURE = DIDN'T HAPPEN!! (NPDH) 8-)

Cheers,
Dave F.

Billy - are you sure it's even worth 2G?

No I'm not getting $10k per guitar. I haven't sold any yet - not quite ready for that. Although my last one was made for my daughter and she seems happy with it.

I've seen some nice looking guitars on this site but I'll take the plunge and post some pictures anyway -probably by this weekend.

A question: Of all the ones you've built which style and materials are your favorites?

Good question. I like all kinds of music which makes it difficult to narrow down a favorite kind of guitar. I guess I would have to put classicals and archtops at the top though. I like the mellow and expressive sound of nylon strings and the clarity (not sure if that's the best way to describe the sound - less overtones?) of an archtop. I'm considering making a nylon string archtop. I've heard mixed opinions on how well they work but it is an idea that interests me.

As far as which materials I like I'm not sure. I haven't built enough to really hear the differences.
