When I remove the masking tape off the edge of the fingerboard I can feel a ridge. Makes sense, I sanded my neck to meet the edge of the fingerboard, then added finish to the neck. So in reality I should sand the neck, the thickness of the finish, below the edge of the FB. How do you guys not end up with that ridge? Do you go back and lightly sand where they meet? Clinton

If I understand you, you taped the side of the board up to where it meets the neck. Instead, you should tape only the top surface of the board, and finish the side of the board along with the neck. The finish ridge left at the corner between the face and side of the board will come off when you bevel the fret ends.

OH, I've been tapping off the "edge" of the FB. I should of mentioned the FB is not bound.Let's say the FB is ebony. I tape off all ebony and only expose the neck material. So you only tape off horizontially and not vertically. Thanks, I just never caught on to or heard anyone talk about how and where they tape off the neck. I really appreciate the clarification. Yes, just the top surface of the fret board.

Common Mistake. I did my first like that. You'll be happy when you get it refinished, it looks really nice.

There are a few tricky caveats finishing necks, like do you finish with the nut in or out? If in, do you mask it or not? Kinky questions, all good ones to ask. Good luck on the neck.

I finish with the nut out and I mask off the area so I don't have to go back and clean up this small area where the nut sits. I guess the best thing about this problem is that I FB the neck so I can lightly sand and refinish it including the "edge" :D Clinton
