Thanks for that info Todd. It looks like the old nylon bushing is also missing from the new setup. How do the new tuners feel when you turn em. I notice that there is still a little casting flange on the tuner button, which for the money I guess can be ignored. John |

tight and smoot ...ditto...I just put a set on about 3 weeks ago and they feel great for a tuner in that price range. |

Thanks Todd and an excellent write up! Stew-Mac is now shipping the "V" series, the new ones and I just checked my stock of Grovers and the two sets that I have are the new series. IMHO the new ones feel a bit tighter and smoother too. This was a good improvement that Grover made to these already good tuners and now I feel even better about them. Remember too that the Grovers have the exact same hole patterns as the Waverlys which makes upgrading, if someone wants to do so, very easy. |

They should do a 3 on a plate for slot heads. 3 on a plate makes for a much stronger peghead and that's one of the reasons I use the Gotoh sets. |

I've never seen nor heard of a failed Waverly machine... A loose bushing or two(literally, only 2 that I know of) that are easily taken care of with a special wrench they will supply when asked. |

Well, you should take things you read on a religious site with a little bit of skepticism. Based on the rave reviews of the "new" Sta-tites a few years ago, I started using them on slot heads. Until I had a couple with the worm jumping the spur and noticed how badly designed the bushing mounts were on the worm shaft. I returned all my remaining sets to StewMac (their tech guy said, "You didn't expect to be getting Waverly quality for 1/4 the price, did you?"). So it looks like they attended to the problem area, but the tech guy's words still ring in my ears. I've gone Waverly on all slot heads. My customers deserve it. My guitars deserve it. I'd use Gilberts, I guess, but no one has asked. |

Todd, have you used the Gotoh open back tuners? If so, would you say that the new Grovers feel any better than the Gotoh open backs (15:1 ratio, I believe) or are they pretty much equivalent in terms of quality? |

Allparts has the Grovers for $30 per, which makes me suspect they're the old ones - The pic they use sure is of such... |

well Grumper .. I had to have a set of the 3 on a plate replaced .. the B string button could turn almost a half revolution without affecting the strings tuning .. the customer was somewhat bummed, being across the pond and having to wait a few weeks to actually get replacements. The new set he received is definitely better, but the action from string to string on the tuners is not the same IHO, again the G and B .. feel tighter than others. I cant say that about the Gotohs I have used. That said, nothing looks like the Waves do .. cant win 'em all ... One of my students showed up with his set of what I now see are the older Grover 97s ... compared to set of Gotoh SD700s , they are downright terrible. Needles to say, the Gotohs are going on his new baby. Cant say what the new 97s are like, but I am sticking with Gotohs. |

I get mine here in Toronto from Heinl's - ask for Gary Gougher I believe Shane Niefer (our Lutz man) also can get them as well looks like the nomenclature may have changed - although mine as definitely Sd's, the new catalog I have shows them as an SE - they also make an SE510 tuners as well, but its hard to tellwhat the differences are vs the 700s, the ratios are still 15:1 Someone in the US must sell them though ... |
