One thing I don't like about it is the inability to articulate the tip. I suppose if you're going down a narrow tube it may be adequate with it's wide angle lens. That's why it's called a Bore Scope I guess. For guitar interior work (especially for you Archie-Boys) you'd need the ability to have the tip (lens) move where you needed to inspect. I believe that Frank Ford uses a fiber-optic scope in his shop. You might check out Frets.com. Also, I'll bet our resident Orthopedic Surgeon (Terry Kennedy) has endoscopically inspected more than a few knee joints over the years. I'm sure he'd be able to weigh in more intelligently on the Harbor Freight product as well as features that would be cool for guitar work. |

I bought one several years ago after seeing either Dan Erlewine or Don MaCrostie use one. It was only Black and white though, not color. You had to look thru an eye piece on a camera like devise to see. It worked o.k. but you couldn't really photo graph anything with it because of the eye piece. I SENT IT BACK. I think it was garrett wade. Any how got something in the mail the other day where you hold what looks like a gun ( sort of like those thermal guns). the tube comes out the end and mounted on the gun is a small screen maybe 1.5" x 2.5" in full color - it was $199.00 probably same quality as HF but $60 less. These are probably better that the old GW technowlogy wise. I think it could be pretty usefull. Probably could do a google and find it. If i find the magazine I will update. |

Somebody has to make a cheap PC cam that has a small amount of pan/tilt you could control from the keyboard. I looked around a couple of years ago but could only find the relatively large security cameras. The laptop cams are plenty small but you'ld have to position them by hand and I was never able to find out their minimum focal distance. There were some gooseneck models that had an integrated light that looked promising. |

I have a cheap Logitech USB eb cam that manually focuses down to about 1" or less. It works pretty well inside acoustic bodies with the foot removed, though I wish the focal length was a bit shorter, to get a wider angle. No pan or tilt. Pretty good depth of field, so the focus setting isn't critical. I paid about $25. The pen tip was taken about 1" from the front lens element. On the camera, the greenish ring around the lens is the focus ring. Attachment: pen.jpg Attachment: logitech_quickcam_webcam.jpg Attachment: infinity.jpg Plus, you get to do infinity expirments! Really slow day here today. |

I saw an article about the Rigid borescope in a woodworking magazine I get. It sounds very intriguing, I intend to look at one the next time I'm in Home Depot. |

Yes I've scoped tons of knees J.J. We worked off a 21" TV monitor with a really nice camera so I''m pretty spoiled. I don't think I'd rush out to buy this Harbor Freight item. Maybe they have some good stuff but everything I've ever seen was junk. I'm getting better with the mirrors and plan to stick with that. I do have an old flexible sigmoidoscope that was my dad's and I need to dig that out and see if it's any good for looking in guitars. I think it has a 35mm camera mount. Terry |
