I was wondering how people are getting their guitars to Miami. This is my first time flying to a show. How are you packing them? Case within a case?

Thanks!

It is only a 380 mile drive for me, so I'm driving down to the show. I have wondered how others would get their guitars down there as well... Good question!

By the way, Heat is a BIG issue down here, even in April. I have been running my air conditioner for 2 days now in the house and shop because of the heat, and this is February. For those if you that are shipping your guitars, you may want to consider the heat and humidity issues before you ship them. Make sure they wont be sitting in a hot warehouse waiting on you to pick them up.

I understand that Henry has something set up so that guitars can be shipped directly to the convention center, and that may not be a bad idea. An overnight shipment, direct to the center would most definitely be the safest way to get them there if you are going to ship them.

Hi Randy,
I'll be using my Deluxe Clam from Case Extreme. This is the overcase made from Coroplast (corrugated plastic....tough... light weight...) in which your regular case is suspended by "C"
shaped foam blocks. the Deluxe version has removable wheels
(a must for getting it through the Airport).
I bought this last summer to transport materials and a guitar case to the Romanillos Course in Spain and to transport the assembled guitar home.........all arrived in excellent shape.
These are kind of clunky to deal with but far less expensive (around $200-$250) than a Calton or some of the other flight worthy cases so if you are traveling alone I'd say one of these and a back pack would be about all you could handle.
Looking forward to seeing you there!!

Dave,

Thanks for the reply. I was considering getting those cases, but I don't see how I could manage with three guitars by myself in the airport. I'll have to see what Henry has set-up for shipping.

Ken, thanks for the tip on the heat and humidity. Looking forward to seeing everyone there.

Just out of curosity, how many guitars are y'all planning on bringing?

I have a 4 foot table and I am planning on bringing 4 guitars. Plus one for the room and night life (if any).

I just wondered if that was to many or about the right number for that size table?

Ken, I think that might be a little tight on a four foot table. I've got a six foot table for three although I could easily do four. Three on six foot table is what I've done in the past along with promotional materials. Someone with more experience showing might have a different opinion.

I've reserved a 4 foot table and will be bringing only one guitar. More would not be managable as I will be traveling alone by air.........to display four guitars on a four foot table I would think you 'd have to have them almost edge on to the public which certainly won't display them to their best advantage.........I've been preparing a high quality photo album of my work to have on display as well.

Best!

I have a 6' table and will be bringing three guitars, four if I can squeeze out one more before April.
I think Paul Woolson and Tim McKnight have checked there guitars at the airport and even carried
them on before.

I use the Clam Case when I fly too. Several trips with no problems.
I suppose there will be some sort of ship to address available for sending by common carrier...better have the Heritage insurance all paid up....

1.5' per guitar is tight; 2' is comfortable.

Lance,

Paul and Tim actually carry on three guitars? I didn't think this would be possible. If I fly with them I figured they would have to be checked.

Chas,

Is it really no problem dealing with three clam cases at the airport by yourself? Do you know approximately how much the airlines charge per case each way?

Lots of questions. Thanks

Even when packed with a case, clothes and guitar wood, the Clam did not exceed fifty pounds. Comng back from Spain it was far lighter.....Iberia did not charge an additional fee either way......check your airlines baggage policy. A guitar in a regular case inside the Clam should not exceed their minimums, however, additional pieces beyond those allowed plus one carry-on most likely will.
Handling three Clams in the airport (along with your regular luggage) will be in a word, miserable, without one of those luggage carts that you can rent, it would be near impossible for a single person.....not to mention fitting them all into a cab at the end of the trip........
