I am shopping for a larger plane. I want something that is good for both jointing plates and thinning plates.

I currently have a too small old wooden plane, which works well, but really not great at jointing, and a small block plane... :oops:

What do you guys think about this 5 1/4 Veritas?

I have that plane and LN low angel and the Avante #6 among others. The LN is super! Ready to go straight out of the box and sharp as a razor. The Veritas and the Avante will both need a bit of tuning. The Avante a bit more than than the Veritas. But the Avante (too me) has better balance than the Veritas but is a less expensive plane. I use the LN most of the time in the shop but take the Avante with me if doing any outside work or when traveling to friends shop to help out on a project

That will work fine. I joint plates with no problems using a Lie-Nielsen 4 1/2.

I love my Veritas low angle jack... Does a lot. A couple of extra blades and you can work end grain, highly figured woods, and toothed blades are also available. Sides are also dead square for shooting (joining). Give it a look. Colin

I don't have that plane, Alex. My favorite guitar plate jointing / guitar top thicknessing plane is a type 11 Stanley #5 1/2 with a standard iron. I have many planes that are more fancy, upgraded with Hock irons, are more expensive etc. than this one, but the thing just works. I have it tuned up real nice, of course.

Sorry about that... (you won't retaliate I hope? ) BTW, I have 3 of those Anant planes, and I think they are pretty 'cheap' in most respects. For the money, you can buy a better used Stanley / Sargent / Record etc. on eBay or preferably from a respectable used tool dealer like Patrick Leach.

I'm thinking, if he want something smaller than the low angle jack, then this one: http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=2&p=45864&cat=1,41182,48944 would work better, as the sides are square, making it easier to join plates. But again, the Lee Valley/Veritas low angle planes are top-notch. You will need to give the blade a final honing, but otherwise the planes themselves need no tuning out of the box. Colin

i Loved the veritas block planes and they make an amazing low angle spokeshave that use all the time for carving necks. but i was a little disapointed with the larger planes. i have beval up smoother plane and i dont realy use it much in fact i was thinking of selling it on ebay and getting a lie neilson. my favourate plane i a realy old stanly 4 1/4 with rio handles. i lapped the sole on an industrial lapping machine and it works like a dream. allthough i personaly think its to short fointing jointing anything longer than 15". i would go for a ln 4 1/2 if i were going to buy a plane now. joel.

Hey all Heres a "little" number I picked up recently to accomplish my joining operations - LN #7 however @ 8 1/2 Lbs its a bit of a brute to lug around for long periods of time in a wheelchair, so Im planning to reserve it for joining tops and backs ... and get a bevel up jointer for anything of larger scale tasks... as they are much lighter... Some years ago, I bought several Anant planes (Jack, Smoothing and Jointer), tuned them up and replaced the irons and chipbreakers with Hocks. They now have flat sole plates and perform beautifully. I can't tell you how many hours I spent pushing them over a flat, abrasive surface until they showed uniform scratches...and then they were sanded with finer grits even further. I'll have these on the next swap meet and would be perfect for the beginning woodworker. If anyone is interested before that time, PM me. I'm using the proceeds to move to a LN.

Skyhigh, LN stands for Lie Nielson, as in Tom. A maker of beautiful and well made woodworking planes and tools.

I must have a new shiny one, even if it costs a bunch I am leaning towards the LN 5 1/2 now. Not sure I need the fancy smoothing capabilities right now, not going to build with unusual woods for a good while. So far Ive been using a single 10" old wooden plane, and definitely not fun to shoot edges with it. Recently (after finishing my first scratch guitar in Jan) I bought a Stanley 60 1/2 block and I kind of wanted a big plane too to get better joints for my next build.
