I've just recently been doing some finishing tests for my nearly completed electric guitar (oak body, maple top). It seems that the maple takes 5 or 6 coats to build a sheen and have a degree of smoothness which seems like too many coats to me. For the finishing sample i sanded and wet sanded the wood down with very fine paper and then stained the top. Should I fill the grain with something like Z-Poxy before I stain and oil the wood? I'm a little new to finishing so I'm not to sure on some points. Also, how many coats of tung oil should usually be used?
thanks
