I have now had a lesson in humility. I bent my bindings and purflings. Bindings cracked in numerous places, and broke in one, but I was able to salvage it all. I did have to start over on bending the top purfling, because it twisted when I tried to bend stuff together. I found out I did better bending one thing at a time. Takes longer, but easier to control on a hand bender. I did get it done Saturday night, and today I cleaned it up some, and worked on my finger board a bit. Here I'm gluing in bindings and purflings on the top edge. Attachment: P1000632 (Large).JPG Here is the back done. Had one problem piece, that I could see. Lots I didn't see. Attachment: P1000633 (Large).JPG Here is the top before clean-up. Attachment: P1000634 (Large).JPG Clean-up started on the top. Attachment: P1000635 (Large).JPG Back before clean-up. Attachment: P1000636 (Large).JPG Cleaning up the sides with a scraper. Attachment: P1000637 (Large).JPG Looking better, after some scraping. Needs more still. Attachment: P1000639 (Large).JPG Tail-strip after some scraping. Attachment: P1000640 (Large).JPG Continued in next Reply. |

Here is a close-up of the tail area. I tried mitering my purflings, and it came out OK, but I'm switching to black fiber in the future. The black dyed veneer chips too much both when cutting and when scraping. some little pieces pulled out. What a pain to fix. I'll post my little mitering jig in another thread. It seemed to work pretty well, and it can be used after bending and fitting. Attachment: P1000641 (Large).JPG Here are the sides after some scraping. Attachment: P1000642 (Large).JPG Here is the back with most of the clean-up done, and some filling already done. Attachment: P1000650 (Large).JPG Here is the neck end and the heel cap glued on and roughed in. Attachment: P1000651 (Large).JPG After cleaning up my B&P as much as I could stand for today, I worked on my finger board. I got it tapered close to finished dimensions, 7mm at Nut and 5.5 Treble side and 4 on bass side.at the 19th fret area. This board is BRW. Does anyone think I should use Ebony? I do have an Ebony board for using, if I decide to. Attachment: P1000653 (Large).JPG Here is the top with the board and bridge blank in place. Attachment: P1000654 (Large).JPG The whole thing. Attachment: P1000663 (Large).JPG Thanks for looking, again. ![]() |

Another GREAt pictorial Waddy! As far as the ebony....I like the rosewood you have chosen. Since the binding is rosewood also, I think it all "fits" together just fine. Getting close to hearing this beast!! wooot ![]() |

Nice job Waddy! How much longer do you estimate before you get it strung up? What type of finish are you doing? |

Looking good Waddy!! You're zooming along with that first build now....putting me to shame. All I managed to do this weekend was to profile my fretboard, drill it, and glue in the paua dots. Cheers, Dave F. |

Thanks everyone. I feel closer now. Before, it was hard to see the end, but it is coming along. I have a lot of little touch-up stuff to do. Glad to know about the heat thing, Todd, thanks, another reason for using TiteBond, which I did not use. I used LMI White. Don't know if it has the same properties. |

Don't fret the little mess ups, we can't see them in the photos anyway. Just tell us that its perfect and we'll have to believe you! Use the rosewood fingerboard. I love fingerboards with some character. |

OMG Waddy......I envy you soooooo much....what a craftsman you are. This isn't your first guitar, you've been making them all your life....lol Great Job! I just hope my first comes out half as good as this wonderous piece of art. I think it's beautiful. I love all the earthy tones in it and I agree with Ken and the others on the fingerboard. It blends in perfect. NIIIIICE! |

Waddy, very nice job. With classical necks I always have trouble keeping the area where the neck joins the body nice and clean, especially during finishing. |

That is definitely a problem. I have been experimenting with methods, but the only thing I can get to work in there is a scraper... Sandpaper just seems to make a mess, particularly with the grains running in the opposite direction to the ones that would make sanding easy. |

I've thoroughly enjoyed these glimpses into your build Waddy. Excellent work, too. Hopefully I'll get a chance to see this guitar at some point. As for the question, I'd go with the braz fingerboard. |

Thanks, Bill! I actually think the Braz board looks cool. Don't know if that's Kosher for a classical though. It's mine....I guess I can do what I want, huh? |
