Hi, I am a complete beginner when it comes to guitars both making them and playing them although I am a woodworker and have some knowledge, although limited, about wood and tools etc. I was thinking of starting by working out the specialist tools, like finger planes, and jigs I'll need. I did a search for jigs but didn't get any results. Any assistance pointing me in the right direction appreciated. HH. |

Happy Hammer, first off welcome here and if you don't mind put your real name at the bottom of your posts so we can call you by name. What might be a good idea for you to do is hook up with some of the other Auzzie's who are all set up so you can get an idea of what you need. Bob Connor is on the East side of the counrty as well as several others. Also for more access to the local Australia luthier's you can check out Bob's Australian/New Aealand Luthiers Forum. Not that I'm telling you to go there and not here, we're all happy to have ya here. |

Luthier Suppliers at the top of the page has a BUNCH of jigs and tools that come in mighty handy. I have bought several from him and am well pleased with the service and quality of the tools and jigs. Welcome to the forum! PS: you wont need any hammers to build a guitar. No nails either. |

You know.... I was looking at another forum and discovered that William Cupiano uses 3 small tacks to hold the soundboard in place on the neck. I was shocked to see the nails going into a guitar, especially a classical guitar. You never know what little secrets like this come out of hiding when the spotlight gets turned on |

I read somewhere that Stradivari used three or four nails to attach the neck to the heal block on his guitars. |

Thanks for the welcome and the info. on Bob's site, have registered there also. I'm looking at a 10 day Luthier course but that probably won't be until next year. Was just looking to see what standard jigs and tools I should begin collecting. I'd rather build the jigs myself than buy them so I guess I'm looking for plans, maybe start simple with some smaller general jigs then move up to the larger ones which I'm guessing will be specific to the guitar I decide to build. I look forward to making a contribution once I'm off and running and posting on putting the jigs together and then hopefully my first guitar next year after my course. I understand the name thing but I don't really do that in open forums. HH. |
