That's excellent, and easy too.

Thanks Todd [:Y:]

Thanks for posting this Todd. I remember seeing your jig before and it was one of those head slap moments for me. Such a simple jig and now it's been made even better.

Todd - Thanks for the pics on the jig!

Do you have a pic with the drill in the right position? I am having trouble visuallizing where you are drilling.

I might suppose that holding the drill and the camera at the same time might be hard.......?

Thanks,

Cool little gizmo Todd!

Nice work!

I got a question though: how did you manage to make the three holes line up good? Did you just make multiple tries until you got one that was satisfying?

Wow! When you click on a picture you get a full size one where you can see the detail! [headinwall] [headinwall]
I was trying to see the pics and even with bifocals I couldn't see the holes.......................

Now I see that the angle leg is the drill guide and you are drilling the side markers in the FB!!!!!!!!

Thanks,

Todd, I'm not visualizing this correctly either. Maybe another pic would help. idunno

That's neat Todd. Have you ever had any issues drilling them before gluing and final leveling the fretboard? i.e. after you level they are not centered or even any more?
Nice job

As for getting the distance correct, I set up a fence on the drill press, do a single and double hole in the right size, then scribe the alignment marks. I'll shoot an 'in use' shot to cover the request.

Do you have to pre-punch first? I would assume the bit would wander around a little, thus making it hard to align the three holes...

I now drill mine after the fretboard is glued and leveled and have gone back to free handing them. One thing that works great as a center punch and is quite easy to position with precision is the sharp double ended scribe Stew Mac sells for scribing around inlays. (#1672) You can get it just right and then work it in to make a fairly big hole that will keep your drill bit right on track.
