Hey Folks... I am trying to knock out a bunch of guitar related tools before my actual guitar stuff gets here. Thought I might post a couple of pics and hope that some of you can provide some insight into what I've done. This binding jig is a copy of something I found at another website so I can't take credit for it's design. KennethMichaelGuitars.com designed the original, or at least that's where I saw it. Thanks to some military background I am very good at scaling out photographs of things. The only things that are not complete on this jig is attaching it to the trimmer base and beveling the front lip of the 'toe'....the part the rides on the top or bottom of the guitar. I thought it might be best to wait until I get the plans to determine what that should be. This jig is on a PC310 Laminate Trimmer. I made the jig out of Brazilian Cherry because it's so dense and heavy. I figured the extra mass would help in steadying the trimmer wilst trimming. Let me know yall! Chris |

Chris, Looks pretty good. Your ledge or shoe for your jig looks flat and BIG. Likely if it is flat and big, it will move away from the guitar in tight spots like the neck area of the back and the waist of a shapely guitar. There are many examples of a tool much like yours. Frets.com comes to mind. One of the field trips to Fox Guitars shows some nice ones. Most of these cutters have a domed shoe, allowing the router to pass and cut spots where the corner of the body is more than 90 degrees square. Do try it, as is. Then you'll see mods are needed. I bet you will figure it out and it will work well with some minor mods. Delrin material might also give you a better wear surface? Good luck and welcome to the OLF, where Old Luthier Farts hang out.... |

Bruce....thanks for your input. I finished it up today....(finished drilling the holes and fitting everything).....I am going to wait until I get the plans for the guitar before I finish shaping the 'toe'. I realize the radii of the top and back are going to affect it at well as a tight curve. I'll end having to cut some off of the 'toe' to compensate for it. I tested it today and man I love it. I have many hours of use with routers and made sure the machining on this jig was spot on. Works great! I also made a phenolic resin routing plate for a dremel tool....It works great too.. |
