Stew Mac has a nice kit. I'm in the process of assembling one now.

International Violin Company has several kits, as well as violins in the white. Worth a look International Violin Company

Now that sounds like some good father and son time together. Maybe I'll try that one on my daughter. She's 11 and in her 6th year of violin. Google violin kits. There's a lot. International Luthiers has a nice selection.

Good Luck!

That sounds like a great project. He'll remember it forever. A kit is a good choice, building a violin is a big project if you start from scratch. There are quite a few specialize tools.

International Violin has a nice kit VK-1 made in Germany by Hoffman I believe. I built one years ago and it turned out to be a nice instrument. I would recommend this one over the Chinese made kit in their product line. If you can afford it get the higher priced kit which is the same but has prettier wood.

Most 7th graders (boys) are into a full sized instrument. Keep in mind that you will want to make it look "regular" due to peer pressure at that age level. You will want a nice brown/red varnish, no stain or anything that will come out looking too different.
