How do you post photos so that they are not in separate boxes labelled 'Attachment"?
For instance as in this thread. Further down the thread Lance also has one in a box.

Hi Dave,

To post photos without all the attachment gubbins, you have to have your photo hosted somewhere on the web, then point to it using the "Img" feature in the post editor. This puts UBB code in your posting that links to the photo hosted elsewhere on the web.

For example, I have a picture of a marquetry sign I made a while back on my woodworking website.

To make this appear in a posting, I would first type or copy/paste the URL into the post editor, then select it (by clicking the left mouse button and running the cursor over the whole URL), then click on the "Img" box just above the editor window.

This puts the code at the end, and would look like this to other forum viewers:

Image

If I have a full-size version of the picture in question, I make the image in the thread into a URL to it, so if the user clicks on the small photo, they will be linked to the high-resolution version. To do this, I encompass the img code with a set of "URL" codes"

[img]http://www.daveswoodenwonders.com/images/MGsign_Final_3s.jpg[/

I deliberately didn't finish typing the code in the line above, so it will show up in my posting for you to read.....at the end it should say [/img], but if I typed that, you wouldn't see the formatting....

So, for my pelican sign, the small picture that is a link to the big picture would look like this:

Image
(click the pic to see it in glorious full resolution!)

You can find plenty of places on the web where they will let you host your photos for free. I'm sure someone else will chime in with some ideas on that for you.

Hope this helps,
Dave F.

The problem with posting links to pictures hosted elswhere rather than uploading to the forum directly is that in the future these pictures are often lost to the archives. We have had a number of cases in the past when peoples servers crash or they change there website and then valuable information is lost to the forum. When possible please upload pictures directly.

Thanks Dave and Colin. I wondered if that might be the case. I sometimes look at a French forum (BenoƮt de Bretagne) which seems to have the same format as this one, except that it doesn't have the option of posting attachments. You have to host the images elsewhere for them to appear. I imagine it's an option that the forum proprietor can choose. What made me ask was that, on this other forum, if you click on an image it takes you to the image-host site whereas here that doesn't happen.

Yeah, offsite hosting ruins archives for practical use. Might as well delete instead of archiving tutorials and useful pictorial instruction.
