Anyone have any shipping do's and/or don't pointers? I've shipped three guitars so far. All three with different carriers and haven't had any problems yet, but any particular precautions that ya'll take?
Thanks.

You Might want to check out George Gruhn's page on shipping instruments.
Here's a link http://www.gruhn.com/features/packing/
about a year or so ago I had a guitar broken by the postal service. I did not pack it as shown in the Gruhn article and if I had, I'm pretty sure it would have survived.
Good luck.

I pretty much do as Gruhn explains .. with one major exception .. I would NEVER have plastic bubble wrap touching a nitro finish, even if only for a few days in shipping .. I ALWAYS wrap the bubble wrap in felt where it will touch the guitar.

I also won't use plastic bubble wrap against the guitar. I have wrapped it in soft cloth however and used it.

Here are Frank Ford's thoughts: Pack Up My Old Guitar

Special emphasis on securing the headstock against whiplash.

Important also is to avoid shipping during periods of extreme temperature (hot or cold) especially if it's a guitar with new finish.

I go to home depot and get 4x8 sheets of the 1 1/2" thick styrofoam insulation material. I cut and stack it to completely fill my shipping box usually 20"x50"x8" and then lay the guitar case on top and trace around it. I then cut out the guitar shaped piece on the bandsaw and insert the case. Often the stack is about 7 inches tall so I put in a thin sheet of the same material top & bottom to fill the box. Normally I try to use the USPS but they have been raising thier prices. I really don't trust UPS or Fedex but have taken a chance occasionally on Fedex. No problem yet.
