Post subject:  making mosaic marquetry rosettes?

Hi guys. Was looking for info on how to make classical rosettes in forum archive but have found nothing on designs. Lots of info on measurements and how to get started but was looking for info on designing. Is there any detailed literature available about making mosaic marquetry rosettes? Thanks for the advice guys.

Irving Sloane and Roy Courtnall cover rosette making in their respective books.
As far as creating a design, get some graph paper and go to it.
Each square represents one individual "pixel" or stick in the layup as it were.
Use colored pencils to create your design and construct it according to the drawing.
Enjoy.

I haven't found a lot out there, some in Cumpiano and Natelson and more in Roy Courtnall's book. Here's a couple of links that give a very small amount of help. There is also a free script out there somewhere on the internet that is simple and provides some help with design, but I've lost the link. I use autocad to help me design

Go to the Drexel U website for a couple of rosette applets that allow you to design a rosette, then print it out. You can edit the colors. It is a little primitive, but it works, and you can have tiles up to about 40x40. Drexel U Guitar Software

Remember to leave room at the left and right edges of your tile design so that they can be beveled in order to fit them around the arc.

The most thorough and comprehensive tutorial on making Spanish style rosettes that I have read is the article by Eugene Clark in GAL #71, fall 2002.

Pick up a copy, I guarantee that you will find it interesting and he goes into great detail with many photographs of each stage of the process. He also includes many photos of various rosette designs including his own, Santos Hernandez, Manuel de la Chica, Velasquez and Conde.

The Clarke article wasa two-parter. The first had a lot of stuff about dyes and such, and I think most of the pictures of rosettes were in the second part. Get them both. That's an ORDER!

Al,
Have you ever written an ASIA or GAL article about your technique on making rosettes? I've heard your talk on the subject several times and it is a wonderful process, albeit borderline insane.

What do you mean, _borderline_ insane? Or are you just trying to be polite?

:)

Actually, I've been thinking about an article for some time. I'm planning on making another set of jigs to make the parts that would turn the braid I'm using on Classical size rosettes into a true 'knotwork' that returns on itself. Should only be a dozen or so jigs.... What I need to do to get an article out of it is to get a digital camera with better resolution: 1.3 megapixels dosn't cut it for that small stuff.

Nice, Dave!

All I do to design my rosettes is go to your standard windows Paint program, and zoom in to full zoom. You'll have a nice grid to work with and all the colors you could ever want.
