Well Hesh, because the back is not ready, and the box is not ready to close, and I would like to get working on something. This baby needs to start moving forward, ya know?? Im thinking if you clamp it in the mold its not gonna move. Oops, I mean cut the binding channel..

No, do not attempt to cut the binding channel until the box is closed and sanded. While you are waiting for the back to be "ready" Take the time to learn the Luthiers Mantra, "Haste makes waste" This is not meant to be harsh, trust me I learned this the hard way. |

It was just an odd question in terms of the traditional sequence of guitar building - I hope that my question to you did not come across as me being judgmental. And now since the question has changed, you are asking about cutting the binding channel on a backless guitar I'll add to what the others have said: Many in not all of the methods that folks use to cut the binding channel, hand held router, Williams jig, gamil, etc. need a back installed to register on. |

It was just logical thinking: Just read on MIMF forum that the tap tone will change once the binding is on. Read on the guy that explained tap tone that he waits until his sides are on to tap tune, So obviously you have to bind before you can tap tune, and you have to leave the back open...

If the tap tone will change when you bind the top, imagine what will happen when you glue on the back (never mind add the back binding!). The problem is that there will never be anything available for comparison; whatever you do will be unique. Dan |

| I love that emoticon and I am trying to use it as much as I can today...... OK.... so you read a post on the MIMF where someone likes to have access to the top's braces to make adjustments after the top is attached and the top bindings are installed. Is this correct? I think that what they are doing, and many do this, is to leave the back off so they can access the top's braces but I also think that they are not binding the back until the top tweaking is complete, the back is attached and then they bind the back. It would not surprise me if they have not bound the top yet either if the back is off. Many of us tune our tops off the guitar - get John Mayes Voicing and Advanced Voicing DVDs (excellent BTW) and you will see this done. |

I ask the same as Hesh, Why would you do this. You will end up in a big mess. I don't know you ability in building so may be way more advanced and could, but bet not. What about the the curves and radii of top and back for channels, the profile of the sides unless there are none and both straight. I may be and not unusual may have not read question right, but sound like to me your asking about cutting binding and purfeling channels in top, back and rims with everything flat. Good luck if go forward and if works out great, if not buy more wood |
