A few humble teasers to show my progress on my first (somewhat) scratch built. I know you all love pics, so here you go. The guitar will be Myrtle and Cocobolo, with a bearclaw top. Here I am planing the sides, showing the sides in the mold (I used an electrically heated iron), the rosette, backstrip and fretboard, and the neck nearly finished with the unfinished fretboard (from LMI). I haven't finished the headstock and want to keep it a secret for a while. The head, end of the fretboard and bridge will all have a similar profile. I loved bending, once I got the feel for it. Any encouragement welcome! |

Excellent, keep us updated! I absolutely love Myrtle. I am STILL working on number 3, and LOVE the way the wood has come up under a lot of fine sanding. |

Beautiful job sharpening that plane iron! If you can get shavings like that on figured wood, you're doing something right! Lookin' good! |

Steve, That wood combination is going to look great. Did you make your own jig for the bridge? Are you going to FP this one? |

Steve, that's looking great. Is the neck block simply sitting on the end of the neck, or is it actually part of it, as in Spanish construction? (Or did you already explain that...and I just missed it?) Steve K |

Thanks all for the nice words and encouragement. Sam: What will you be finishing your Myrtle with? Doug: (nice to see you are still here!) I haven't given any thought to how I am going to make the bridge yet - I just know I want the outline on the back end to reflect the headstock shape. Probably going to FP again, since the first one on my kit guitar went so well, but I am also thinking about easy alternatives. Steve: The neck block is separate - the neck is a conventional M/T with two inserts. Dave F: Good for you! Let's have your progress pics, too. I have to say that doing this is just insanely fun. |
