Well...since haste is a by-product of excitement....I got hasty....

I think I can continue with this...but I just need to be extra careful. This top has ALREADY been thickness sanded to .095 +/- .002......AND.....I already cut the soundhole and profiled it to rough shape.

Saving Graces?...my drill press has a table set up with a locator hole (in the table) for my circle cutter and it hasn't been touched so it's still set up.

So do I just need to be REALLY CAREFUL?...or start over?..FYI...I am still going to try even if you say.."Uhhhh Yeah...go buy a new top...yeah that's it!" pfft

I assume you're talking about not having a rosette channel cut. I expect it to be difficult, but not impossible, to do. I would use a dremel with the Stew-Mac guide.

An update....I found the piece that was cut out (soundhole) lying on the shop floor and managed to 'mate' it back up with the top. Consequently I should be able to line it back up to the drill press fairly easily.

No matter what tool, dremel or otherwise, my perceived problem is being able to find center again. I may have an entirely different problem I don't know about....so if I do please let me know...

Ron what'r you doin up this early.....I couldn't sleep cuz of this issue with the top.

Why don't you put a binding around the inside of the soundhole and forget about doing a rosette.

If you want to see what it looks like have a look at Paul Woolson's website. He's the master of this and if you search through the archives you'll find a tutorial from him on how to do it.

They do look good and it may be a very simple way of fixing this.

Sniggly, it sounds like you need a checklist for order of operations, and a promise to yourself not to violate it anymore.

Believe me, I'm not trying to be rude. I'm guilty of having glued the back on a spanish-heel classical guitar without setting the neck angle first, so I know how bad getting things out of order can get. gaah gaah

I would make up a cross grain patch that will fit between the X brace and the transverse brace.
Glue that to the inside of the top then carefully re-glue the cutout back in to re-establish your center point.
Redrill and off you go. If you are not perfectly centered you can make the soundhole very slightly larger after you do the rosette work.

BTW, the Stew-Mac attachment is made for this, and it doesn't matter where the center is. It just guides off the sound-hole edge.

You could be avant garde and do an off-center rosette! Intentionality can offset what some may call a mistake but others call an opportunity................. :D

Howard this is an OM...Scott Antes plan.....first guitar build for me. The plan calls for 94 thou. Geeeeezzz I wish I had thought of just simply typing 'thou' instead of 'thousandths'. I am about to post some pictures of my work so look for that new post shortly.

I think Todd has the best answer here. Cut a fresh disk with a center hole in it that fits really nice and locate off of that.

I'm with Todd on this one. That should work fine. Once you level the rosette and finish sand you'll have a mighty thin top for an OM. Might just want to make a simple one ring rosette to minimize leveling.

Has anyone ever seen or heard a guitar built by Scott Antes? Googling him I find no evidence of any guitar building; just plan drawing.
