I'm trying to build some cam clamps but I'm unsure about one step, the cam itself. The plans call for a flat spot on one edge of the cam. It looks from the diagram that the flat spot will be in contact with the jaw when the lever is moved forward and the device is in the clamped postion. Is this right? Would it act to 'lock' the lever/cam in place?

Here are the plans: http://www.woodshoptips.com/tips/050304/index.htm

Thanks

I built a few proto's - I can clamp them >not quite to the flat spot, >on the flat spot and I can >also crank it beyond the flat spot for extra pressure - so I dont think thats the only spot on the cam you can use...
I made mine with hardwood bars,, I wouldnt do that next time - metal all the way!!! .... even hard hard maple and oak dimpled after I clamped a bit with them... (I used brass cross pins, insted of knurled steel pins),,,
Cheers

Thanks, I just finished them, still gotta buy the cork padding. Turned out ok except one is a little wobbly. they'll work though.
