| Post subject: | Maple Flamenco? |
Hi all. Here's a question for the flamenco pros out there. Would using maple (birds eye more precisely) as back and sides for a Flamenco would be ok or just totally ridiculous? My experience with maple so far showed me that guitars made with it were very bright sounding and projected quit well. Since those two qualities seem to be in sink with the flamenco sound (correct me if I'm wrong, please!), I tend to think that it would be ok to try it. What do you guys think? |

I have made many Flamencos (Flammers)That's what i call them with maple! I love it! Torres made them also! So did Manuel Ramirez ! I use the 1951 Barbero plan by R.E.Brune' Your right about how it flavors the tone! I use mostly flammed but birds eye should be fine if it's well seasoned ! Alain, Go for it!! Here is a video of Ricardo Marlow; one of the better US flamenco players, playing a Maple flamenco blanca by Hermanos Sanchis Lopez (the sons of Ricardo Sanchis Carpio.) It sounds very good and definitely has the crisp, percussive tonal qualities of a good blanca. Enjoy, Peter |

I agree with Mike Collins, maple could make a fine flamenco. If you keep in mind what you're aiming at, use a good design and keep things very light you should come out just fine. The line between a classical and a flamenco is blurring a bit lately, it would seem. With some players playing on rosewood flamencos (and even in some cases playing on classical guitars) and more classicals being made of cypress. Back in the days of Torres there was no such distinction between "classical" and "flamenco" guitars (thus he never made a "flamenco" guitar - for all intensive purposes they didn't exist) and players just played what they could afford. Go for it. |
