Has anyone here used Mohawk finishes before? I'd like to know what you think of them. Also, has anyone tried their nitrocellulose? I wonder how it compares to Behlen and McFadden's. |

Mohawk is Behlens. |

Hi Jack, I believe that Mohawk is a branch of Behlen. We see more Mohawk branded finishes in Canada, at least that's been my experience, as Behlen is almost impossible to find where I live, in Kelowna, BC I've used the Mohawk Classic Instrument Lacquer with great results. You can spray it over vinyl sealer or shelac without any problems. Cal |

backward: Behlen's is a branch of Mohawk, which is the parent company. Either way, good products, good folks. I also used their nitro. Switched to McFadden's around '99 or 2000. Difference is that the Mohawk will check or craze more readily in extreme cold temps, although that may have changed now. |

I have used, and continue to use Mohawk nitrocellulose lacquer in finishing my instruments. Really, good stuff. I much prefer it over Lawrence McFadden but it probably is more related to what I am used to using rather than the actual quality of the products. |

Behlen is Mohawk's consumer line of products - Mohawk is the commercial line... |

I have used some of their spray can products, and it works pretty well. I was talking to one of their reps at a woodworking show a year or so ago, and he said there was some talk of them doing away with the nitrocellulose lacquers. Maybe they were just floating an idea to see if it would stick. They have not done it - yet. |

What about their colors? Has anyone used the aniline pigments? |

I have used some of the alcohol soluble aniline's in the past, and they were fine, but messy. I found it difficult to get a color that I wanted. My knowledge of mixing is limited. Also, it was very hard to be able to tell how things were going to come out. Took a lot of testing to get it right. Some of the new liquid ones may have better UV survival. |

Aren't Mohawk/Behlen/Star finishes all owned by Valspar now? I may be wrong, but I thought Valspar bought them around '97. |

Just to split hairs, Behlens, Mohawk, Watco, Guardian, Star, Flecto and others are all part of 'RPM Wood Finishes Group', that's the parent company. I've used Mohawks 'Classic instrument lacquer' and it's great stuff. |

In this new millenium, if you haven't checked in the past week you may not know who owns whom. |

It just so happens that I was perusing the 'Richelieu Hardware' site, and when you use a 'directions' icon, you get to download an abode file with all that lovely information. My social anarchist tendencies don't usually render me curious as to who owns whom...I'm not that perverted... |
