This caught my eye, it releases on April 15th. Tax day for Americans. All solid woods and Made in Canada. NAFTA? Ross Perot may have been right about that sound..... grin....

Anyway, looks to be a fine entry level all solid wood guitar, spruce and mahogany. Anyone getting a chance to play one please give us a review. bd

Edit: Actually this is the DSM Model, I guess in my mind it just looked like their Songwriter model. One thing I did get right it's made in Canada and it is solid wood. Specs here: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gibson-Acoustic-DSM-Dreadnaught-Acoustic-Guitar?sku=516409

Bruce, I'm always skeptical of marketing claims! There are a lot of very inexpensive woods being called Mahogany these days. They claim this was "crafted in Canada" - well I wonder exactly what that means.

This could very well be solid Luan that was designed in Canada.

Not sure .. but my guess is its made in the Garrison guitar plant in St Johns Nfld that Gibson bought last year.

Tony you are right Gibson is now or will be expanding production at the Garrison facility in St. John, Newfoundland. As part of the deal when Gibson acquired Garrison, the Garrison facility was to be expanded and Gibson would start producing certain guitars at this facility. Gibson was apparently looking to expand its production capability and I guess they saw a good fit with Garrison.

I'm amazed at how the Canadians can make good guitars for cheap. You'd think they were third world or something. Could it be . . . single payor health care? No, I didn't say that, bad Howard, bad Howard. eek

yeah we had better stay away from this topic... or else mabye someone might bring up how we are practically giving you our oil and gas reserves, and lets not mention the pitance you recieve softwood lumber for, from us...
Its easy to see the detractors (for your nation) when your only looking at it from one side,,,,
Lets just say there are inadequacies about the NAFTA deal for each end!!!

Howard I know you were kidding but you hit on something. If you set up a highly automated and efficient process to the point that your labour costs are a small fraction of the cost to produce your product, and the skilled labour you do need is readily available does it really matter where in the world you locate your manufacturing facility?

Folks lets please keep NAFTA and associated politics out of the thread. [uncle] [uncle] No good comes out of these kinds of debates.

I wasnt trying to stir the pot honestly!
I was just strying to illustrate that there are failings that affect each side in a negative way... Im sure it could be debated ad nauseum... but Anthony is right... it would never accomplish anything .....
Im sure that the Canadian dollar being (relatively) on par ($.98USD) right now makes things even more interesting however, in respect to producing instruments at cheaper rates..
It used to be that an American dollar went for $1.50 up here, which Im sure would translate into a labour savings.... Alot of industries relied upon that fact for thier business success....but how about now? Many are failing because of this....

There are lots of Larrivee guitars being made both in Canada and the US which are sold for sub $1,000, Martin makes and sells a number of sub $1,000 guitars too. What's the big deal? idunno

Yes, we up in the great white north are certainly a 3rd world country, right along side our southern brothers The United States of America duh

Man, someone better lock this down quick. NAFTA, Perot, health care, currency values, US economy - Man, have I ever got some good ones!!

I'm using every last bit of self-restraint I can muster, but I don't know if I can hold out much longer. I'm heading back to the shop, and if this thing is still going when I get home you folks are in for quite a ruckus.

My Bad! You aint cheap but hardly foreign! Where I live there are Canadians everywhere! I think it's because wherever there's a hockey team they think it's Canada! The Kings and the Ducks are Canadian Magnets :D :D :D

I've been doing taxes, taking care of elders, Spent today getting new po boxes to out run the non profiteers! When you are 82 no one really wants to help you, unless you hand them a check. Drove up to my cabin today for the first time in four months, just to see if the snow, wind, thunderstorms, and tornadoes had spared it. Still there. Also working on pics of an 1899 Single Room Schoolhouse trying to get it on the National Register of Historic Places. Someday I'll build again. Just saw this new Gibby and it seemed strange, now I understand. I had to hunt hard for this thread. Maybe someone will try one out and give us a shout..... gaah
