Howdy folks, I'm a pretty new builder, and I've spent quite a bit of time these past few months lurking around here, reading all the back posts, and trying to learn a thing or two. I'm really liking the look and feel of the new site, but have been completely baffled by the search function, especially when trying to pull stuff up from the archives. For example, I often try to search the archive by keywords in the post title. So today I punched in "setup", selected the forum archive, selected search in subforums, and told it to search only in post titles...No hits. so I tried "set up"...no hits. "fret"...no hits. "guitar"...one hit!? Is there some trick to using the search function that I'm not getting? I'm generally pretty savvy with this kind of stuff, but I'm really having trouble digging up the good stuff from the archive. Many thanks in advance...Dan |

Hi Dan and welcome to the OLF! The word "setup" or any of it's variations is pretty general and not as specific as we tend to get here. What aspects of setup are you interested in? You might try primary keys/search words such as "neck angle", "saddle height", "string height" etc. If there is anything that you are specifically looking for info on I am sure that I and a few others would be happy to try searching for you too. Again welcome. |

Thanks Hesh... I included my "setup" search as more of an example. I have trouble with just about any search I enter, when I'm trying to do a post title search. I have somewhat better luck when I limit the search to "post title and first entry", but it just seems inconsistent. Just as an example...I just searched for "bracing" (without the quotes). I selected the forum archive, selected "search subforums", and selected search topic titles only. The result came back with no matches. Now I *know* you guys like to talk about bracing here, and certainly at least *one* of the 40,000+ threads in the archive must have the word "bracing" in the title right? But I can't get it to pop up. I must be doing something wrong, but I haven't been able to figure it out yet. It ain't the end of the world, it just boggles my mind, and I remember from the old site that there was a treasure trove of info buried in the archive. |

Hi Dan. I searched for bracing only I did not specify to search in the post titles only. This is what came back from my search of the archives. http://luthiersforum.com/forum/search.php?keywords=bracing&terms=all&author=&fid%5B%5D=10102&sc=1&sf=all&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&st=0&ch=200&t=0&submit=Search You might want to try not searching the titles. We have a bit of a problem here remembering to title posts in a relevant manner........ |

heh. I click on your link, and the system logs me out and tells me "you don't have permission to use the search system". The universe is a-tryin' to tell me something... |

Yeah, that you need to dump your cookies, shutdown your system and start afresh. Sometimes things get stuck and need a good cleaning to get back to where you want to be. It was doing it to me the other day. |

Yep my friend Lillian is correct - you also have to be logged in to access the archive I believe. The new archive searching software is more powerful then what we had with OLF 2.0 but a little more difficult to understand and use IMHO but I am not complaining and rarely will..... |
