I occasionally teach a couple of different classes at the Marc Adams School of Woodworking, which is just south of Indianapolis, IN. We just finished a guitar building class. It was exhausting, but everyone left with a great guitar. You can see by the smiles on their faces that they had the time of their life. (That's me up front holding a guitar built from OSB - that's another story) |

That is really cool - both the class and the OSB guitar. I won't bother asking why... I'm more of a why not kinda person anyway. It sounds like your whole class had fun and made some good looking (and hopefully sounding) guitars too! How long was the class? |

The class was 6 days (and about 70 hours!). I had the sides bent, the necks and fingerboards and bridges made - the class did the rest. It was an exhausting but gratifying week. The guitars sounded great! OSB?? I did it because someone "dared" me to - then I got curious. Everything is OSB except the X-brace, fingerboard, bridge and headplate. Even the inlay is OSB. Surprisingly it sounds quite good. I will post sound clips of it after my son comes home from college in a couple of weeks - I need help with that sort of thing. |

OSB reminds me of the Taylor pallet guitar. Or that guy who made guitars out of old whisky barrels. |

John, If times are that bad I can send you a top for your next guitar!!  David Webber, a guitar maker in Vancouver, made a spruce topped OSB guitar a few years ago. It looks quite good and sounds not at all too bad either!! It is one of his tradeshow guitars, not that he does shows much anymore. Congrats on the happy grads and good on ya for bringing joy and music to others! Shane |

Shane - I used your fret slotting blade and fret wire for the fingerboards for this class - it was a great combination - a dream to use. I had no fretting issues whatsoever - thanks. |

I thought I'd say hi. I'm new to the luthier community. John had told me about this forum when I took his class. I'm one of those 'wimmin'. It was so much fun and I had no idea I'd get so addicted to making guitars. I sent it to Joe for the finish and he just told me today that he was about to start on it, so I'm really excited to see the finished product. John was a great slave driver...oops, great teacher and had unlimited patience. When I heard my guitar being strummed for the first time, well, I knew I was hooked. I've started on my second one and have sets for another few. Now I need to take some lessons and learn how to play the thing  I've played several other instruments including violin so I think it should be relatively easy to learn. But that's like saying one childbirth is 'easy', it's a relative concept. The OSB guitar was amusing. I couldn't believe it when I saw it, but it does have a decent sound. The class was so instructive, too. There's just a ton of info crammed in my little brain cells now. |
