Just wondering what is the shortest acceptable straight edge for standard steel string building? I have passed up many a 24" and 18" good deals on ebay, only to pine longingly for a true 36". I may also be confusing the straightedge length with the 25.4 scale length (36" rule needed).

16"-18" is fine for most work, and 24" is plenty long enough for things like checking neck angle. I see very little use for anything so long as 36" - it would be more cumbersome than useful. If I were to choose one single long straight edge to have in a guitar shop, it would be 18"

36" is nice if you're working on bass guitars, but I wouldn't use a 36 as my only one.

I have several sizes ... and I virtually NEVER use the 36" one. 12 & 24 are my go to sizes.
