Hello All,

Here are some pics of my most recent guitar, this one seemed to take forever as I changed many of the construction details.....new jigs, forms, etc.. but it seemed to be worth the effort.

WOW it that pretty Greg!!! Do I see an adjustable neck? Beautiful combo of woods and appointments. And that shine is to die for - what is the finish?

Hi Hesh, thanks!

The finish on the body is cat poly from Joe White, the neck is KTM9 finished by me. Actually I built the guitar with an adjustable neck to go along with the cantilevered fretboard extension but I was not happy with some of the "quirks" that go with an adjustable neck so I converted the neck joint to a solid one and am much happier now.

Nice looking guitar Greg, I would love to see more of your construction details, i.e. top plate bracing.
I have been considering building my next in a similar manner.

I like your headstock and back plates a lot and the cantilever neck is awesome too.
And that truss rod cover looks very cool . How good does she sound ?

Thanks Dave.....I love the sound of this guitar, one of my all-time favorites actually, unfortunately I won't have time to record this one...Dang!

Hi John...funny stuff that KTM-9, sometimes it turns out great other times it is a mess, I don't know what to think.

Relative to the adjustable neck, it's a bit complicated to try and explain(for me anyway)....simply put, too much movement of the fretboard extension when string tension is applied, I just didn't like the whole setup. Maybe I built the joint incorrectly, I don't think so though, and to rectify the quirk, well that kind of nullifies the whole point of the adjustable feature so I went with a non-adjustable joint and am pleased with the decision.

Greg, outstanding work dude! The wood combos are fantastic and they execution is top drawer!

I too love koa as a binding. I find its different hues really blend in well with many different woods. I've seen it used with BRW, Mad Rose, EIR and now Coco and the results are always gorgeous. Bends like butter too...

Great job! What's next?

Thanks Bruce....there are ebony purflings on the top and bottom of the binding, just thin strips so they're hard to see in the pics.

Right, I see it now, guess I was so dazzled by the Koa I missed it, it does set off the binding nicely. Good job.
I've only used various rosewoods as binding, think I need to branch out a bit. Looks so good on yours with that
figured Coco...

Nice work Greg! I really like the thin purfling lines and the colors all work beautifully together.

How thick and heavy was your final soundboard compared to other top woods? The sinker redwood I've come across has been pretty floppy; what was your experience with this guitar?

Thanks Andy...my other post-Somogyi guitars sounded very nice, no complaints really, but there was something else tonally I was looking for and I believe I'm headed in the right direction with this one.....yeah, I really love the tone. O.K guys, hold on to your hats, I actually departed (somewhat)from the Somogyi style of building here, the top was made with LESS deflection (it's thicker & not just because it's redwood). I definitely used things I learned with Ervin but I'm heading down my own path now which is a bit different than what we learned.....Lots of differences between this guitar and my previous few and I like this one better(to my ears anyway).

Hey Lex....remember that one piece of redwood we tapped at Ervin's, it rang forever, that's what this sinker sounded like.....Actually this sinker redwood was not floppy at all, a tad more floppy than good spruce across the grain, but with the grain it's pretty darn close. If you were to test it by way of deflection only, the redwood would have come out approx 10% less stiff than good spruce. As I mentioned to Andy, I'm going thicker with my tops, along with many other changes, so it's difficult to say what contributed to the tonal change I'm hearing.
