I think I may have gone a little overboard on my peghead veneers as my final thickness came out at .700" thus making my tuner shafts a wee bit short. I currently am using Grover open back tuners on my builds and was wondering if any other brands have a longer shafts so I dont't have to re-thickness my peghead? Thanks, Ray |

Ray buddy I did that on my first scratch build so I can relate. I remember checking out Stew-Mac's site because they have engineering drawings with dimensions of many of the tuners that they sell. In the end I thinned the peg head from the back side with a block and sand paper and all was well. |

If your top veneer is thick enough, you can do like Charles Fox - he makes his headstock thicker than the norm, but drills a shallow hole in top to recess the washer and nut in order to use standard tuners. |

Thanks guys! I know that Kent Everett does the same to his pegheads as well. (wonderful instruments) Anybody have an idea on how to drill'em after the standard holes have been drilled? |

On an old rickenbacker silver hawaiian that I have, I used the grover Statites designed for slot headstocks and drilled my own string holes in the shafts. This worked because the overall shaft length was greater. Check the drawings on Stewmac to see if this will work for you. |

You can drill a recess for the washer by putting a drill in your drill press the same size as your tuner hole and drilling a hole in a piece of 3/4" particle board clamped to your drill press table. Then stick a dowel of the same size in the hole and let it stick up 1/4" or so. Register your headstock on the dowel, clamp, and switch to a flat bottomed drill bit the size of your washer and drill the recess. I saw this in the old David Russell Young book. A good thing to try on scrap first! Terry |
