I just picked up a Delta Drill Press Model 11-990 yesterday. I bought this on ebay and was a local pick-up - $30. It appears to work well. However, I have a couple of questions:

- I am assuming this will suffice for luthiery (I was eyeballing a Grizzley, but for $30, I figured it was worth the shot)?
- It is very dirty and has some surface rust. Any recommendations for best way to clean up/remove surface rust?
- The table is a little difficult to move up and down - any suggestions for improving this?
- It is missing the chuck - suggestions for places to find a replacement?

Thanks in advance!!

Glenn

Did you mean it was missing the chuck key? What about this?

Yes, that is what I meant. That looks interesting - I will do an Ebay search to see what else is there.

Pretty standard 1/2" chuck, usually. Probably can get one at any local hardware or BORG.

When I lost the chuck key on my drill press, I didn't think much about it until I went to the store. I got to hear a long lecture on how I shouldn't have done that and that they were all different for every manufacturer and how could we possibly be expected to keep all those different chuck keys in stock... It's a bigger chuck, so maybe that's it.

I ended up finding mine, so I didn't worry about it.

It is a good idea to use a chuck key with a spring loaded pin on a drill press though. That way you can't turn it on with the key still in it. (Not that I would have ever done such a thing.)

If you can't find one, you can surely call delta.

Glenn,
looks like a good buy to me. to remove the rust, I use a wire brush (admittedly, I us a cup brush
in a 4" grinder, so it's fast). I've not used "Naval Jelly", or any of the chemical concoctions, maybe
somebody else will chime in on that. For the vertical movement, I'd also wire brush/steel wool the
support shaft, then rub on some paraffin wax, or similar. To keep the table pristine, use one of the
non-oil, non-silicone table protectors available at most woodworking shops.

Thanks for all the replies!

I was able to find a Delta replacement chuck key here:

Gotta love the internet - I was able to find schematics, Operating Manual, replacement parts :D

Thanks!
