I'm building an archtop but this can apply to many other guitars. When the time comes I'm 99% sure I'm going to use a Dovetail Saw and a Chisel. Does anyone here use that method? I know that the router can do this job pretty quick and efficiently.

I was just browsing toolsforwoodworking.com and they have a lot of nice saws. They even have little ones. One is 4" and the other is 6". Are there any advantages to using a smaller saw for this job? I saw a picture of Jimmy D'Aquisto cutting a mortise and the saw was very small. Similar to the ones I mentioned on that web page.

Jack;
the blade has to have a stiff backing!
I use a Blitz saw from Germany!
Lmii used to sell them-but i do not know if they still do!
They have removable blades !!!!!!
cut the male end over size and -do some careful fitting till ya get it where you think it's fine!

good luck!
Go slow!

Mike, thanks. Are the saws with brass backs stiff enough? I'm looking at a Pax.

I do this and find that it is much quicker than using a router with a little practice. I use a dozuki saw and haven't had any issues.
