Post subject:  Volcano Guitar Works – Back From Hawaii With Koa Logs

We recently made a trip to Hawaii to pick up some koa logs and came back with some really nice stuff! Here are a few photos from the trip:

Image
This is one of the latest logs that we brought back. This log fell over naturally at least 20-30 years ago; long enough for an 10 inch diameter ohia tree to grow on the top of it! The bark and sapwood have long ago rotted off. If you look closely you can see a hat on the log, giving you an idea of how large this tree actually is.

Image
The log was so big that we had to call in the "old man of the woods" to give the bulldozer a little help.

Image
Here is the upper part of the tree. The main trunk had split into two branches, each of which was 3 feet in diameter and 12 feet long.

Image
Beautiful color!

Image
Here is a piece that broke off one of the upper logs. Both the color and curl get better towards the main trunk.

Amazing. Sitting on the ground rotting away. Man. What a way to get wood. That is beautiful stuff.

Awesome. Just love that colour!!!

I love it when tonewood comes from wind fallen logs. Most of my local zoot comes form that type of source. Just waitin' for it to air dry.....

Wow gorgeous colour and figure in a couple of those pictures. Y'all gotta just love mother natures air brush. I hope you get a great yield out of those logs.

When you grow up around Mesquite it hard to belive an Acacia of any sort can grow that big

Please post us throughout the remainder of the process. It will be exciting to see the grain as the logs are milled. The only question is, "Do I rob my grandchildren's education funds or my wife's retirement to get a set?"

That particular log is a little further back in the milling order, but we are currently cutting some wood that is very nice. I'll be sure to post pictures along the way.

Give us warning, and I'll make sure I'm well hydrated and that there's adequate flood protection in my locality....

Hey Alan, how much $ for that whole log?
;)

Seriously....I love the color of that, and the figure. When it comes time for cutting it, and when & if sets are available, I would like to buy some of the premium sets.
